Fairfield Eagles Fall to Mineola 9 to 7 After Late Comeback
The Fairfield Eagles battled throughout the game but fell to Mineola 9 to 7 on Friday after the Yellowjackets rallied late.
Fairfield came out strong early, scoring three runs in the first inning behind RBI efforts from Zechariah Smith, Gavin Thaler, and Jackson Murphy. The Eagles added runs in the second and third innings to build a 5 to 1 lead.
Mineola responded with a five run fifth inning to take the lead, but Fairfield answered back in the bottom half of the inning. Gustavo Aguilera stole home and Murphy delivered an RBI single to tie the game at 7 to 7. Mineola regained the lead in the sixth inning and held on for the win.
Zechariah Smith started on the mound for Fairfield, allowing two runs over three innings while striking out two. Landon Cockerell took the loss in relief.
Offensively, Jackson Murphy led the Eagles with two RBIs and went 2 for 2 at the plate. Fairfield was aggressive on the bases, finishing the game with nine stolen bases. Smith and Aguilera each recorded multiple steals.
